Warmwell Winter Warmer
By: Web Editor
November 18-20, 2011 - When I first startedmy scooter/moped riding career back in the 1980s (I know it’s about time to grow up), the rally season was purely a six or seven month affair lasting from Easter to early October. These days however, the use of holiday camps as venues gives us the opportunity of having both pre- and post-season extensions.
Over the last few years this delay to the winter ‘hibernation’ has seen us travelling down to the south west of England, a few miles short ofWeymouth to be exact. Although mid November the roads and weather for our ride was surprisingly ‘mild’ and the GTS soon munched the motorway miles. After only three-and-a-half hours (not bad for 180 miles) we arrived at the gates of the Warmwell Holiday Village and once checked-in were soon parked up at our chalet.Throughout the afternoon the site filled and although the majority of attendees ‘cheated’ there was still a good number of autos with Dragsters, Fuocos – and of course GTSs – bunched together in gangs outside both log cabins and prefab chalets.
This event is very laid-back; put on by the South West Scooter Club Alliance; it’s more like a big end of season party than a rally.
Friday is taken up meeting with mates and sampling the camp’s entertainment. This meant the usual bar and food outlets, and both a main room and a smaller soul room to perfect dance moves in!The main room had a mixture of DJs and around 10pm a live band called ‘The Racketeers’ took to the stage. They played a lively upbeat set and went down really well in the now packed room. A late night finish saw us continuing the ‘party’ in the chalets, so the next morning a few sore heads had formed.
On Saturday the site comes alive, with various stalls selling parts and clothing and bikes spinning about. Once again we were blessed with the weather and this meant we could sit around inT-shirts (I know in November!) checking out the latest tuning trends and paint jobs over a good fry-up.
After lunch we took a spin around the local roads and ended up in the nearby village for some local history – okay that’s a bit of a porky; it was more to sample the local scrumpy. We finally arrived back at the site for another night of frivolity just as the venue started up. Once again the rooms were packed, and the DJs again kept the dance floor ‘rocking’; live band ‘Jam DRC’ pumping out mod/new wave anthems mid-evening.
Another late finish meant we left our next day departure until lunchtime. But full of good memories, if not energy; we had another long but luckily ‘calm’ journey home. Thanks to SWSC for all their efforts and planning. By the time you read this we will be working off the Christmas spread and hopefully preparing our rides for another season of two-wheeled fun.
Remember to put this event in your diary for the end of November 2012!
