Cleethorpes '10

2-4 July 2010 - Sun, sea and scooters – no, not a new ‘Bravo’ series, but a fairly good description of the Cleethorpes rally.
My pulley-powered ride once again supplied a faultless journey up to the north-east Lincolnshire seaside resort for the rally. With an excellent campsite at the Stamford Club on Clee Road and numerous B&Bs offering space, the town was already heaving when we arrived. By early evening on the Friday I would guess there were around 1200 people revelling and this must have risen to over 2000 by the Saturday afternoon.
With several local bars putting on bands and entertainment plus three organised Do's, you were spoilt for choice, – but that didn’t stop us ‘sampling’ as much as possible! Saturday centred around the campsite with a custom show and obligatory rideout. A quick look around the site showed a complete spectrum of autos, ranging from oriental 50s, through the Piaggio range, to maxi machines and MP3 ‘trikes’ – the revolution continues! Custom-wise, two pieces of art caught my eye – the latest Dave Briggs’ auto conversion (a 1970s Vespa/Gilera) and a monster ‘tango’ Lambretta with a Honda quad auto engine grafted into it. With excellent weather all weekend, many sought refuge in the bars throughout the seafront and the atmosphere was very friendly with machines buzzing around the town all day.
The return home was a little subdued; once again scorching weather kept us sweating out our excesses, but it had definitely been worth it. This rally is one of the best – great organisation and an ample resort makes this event one not to miss. I for one will be putting it immediately into my diary for next year!
Happy shopper
