Bridlington National Rally
By: Web Editor
> 29-31 October 2010 - After the scooter rally madness of August and September, the month break between ‘Nationals’ was just enough respite to have us ‘gagging’ for this excellent annual event. Although a tad chilly our journey up the East coast ‘inta’ Yorkshire was at least dry – and for a change, without incident!
It was also good to see ‘pockets’ of fellow riders in various lay-bys and petrol stations, their frequency and numbers increasing the nearer we got to our goal. Of course, the final sprint after the Humber Bridge gave a few close calls when slower traffic was brushed aside on the twisty singles, but I’m glad to say we all arrived safe and in good spirits ready for the weekend’s festivities.
Throughout the afternoon the town filled and by early evening hotel and B&B parking spaces were at a premium as people filtered into the numerous drinking holes. Brid always attracts an ‘ample’ crowd and it was nice to see a few Southerners had also made the effort, as had a contingent from the Continent. With no ‘Darkside’ room (Boo!) this year in the main do, we decided to stay late in the pubs. We finally arrived at the party just before midnight, but this still had a great atmosphere and both bars and dance floor were packed.
This event is slightly different to most rallies in that it’s based around a massive custom show and parts fair. Taking place throughout Saturday the very impressive Spa is transformed into a scooter spectacle with various rooms selling parts and clothing. The main hall houses a custom show, giving almost 100 fantastic machines to goggle at. Although most are vintage types, several automatics have now slipped in and of course, many parts are now interchangeable. It’s also a good place to sample dealer’s wares; ‘Quality Chrome’ always has a large stall, as do various custom paint and covering specialists. In fact if you want a seat covered, a complete custom paintjob or vinyl wrap for your machine, this is the place to come. Looking around the show the quality of craftsmanship is second to none, I’d be proud to own any of the ‘glitteratzy’ and the ideas you can get from a visit is invaluable for future builds.
After spending a good part of the day checking out the show we decided some liquid refreshment was in order. By now the town was buzzing, the streets packed with machines and the ‘refreshment’ facilities doing a brisk trade. This continued throughout the day and culminated in an end of rally Do back in the Spa that night with DJ’s and live headlining act The Selector. Of course this rally wouldn’t have been complete without a little moisture and the journey home gave the opportunity to test out waterproofs and riding skills! Once again though Brid T&C has come up trumps – excellent atmosphere, a top quality show and a fitting way to bring the 2010 season to a close. Thanks to the BSRA for all the hard work they put in on our behalf!
Ride safe – power to the pulley!
