Taking a glance at the pictures of this custom Typhoon, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the owner was a teenager trying to impress his mates. That’s definitely not the case here, because owner Steve Norris, first enjoyed his two-wheeled experience on the back his brother’s Puch Maxi during the 1970s.

Scooter Review: A one-off Typhoon

Piaggio Typhoon.

Steve bought this Piaggio Typhoon back in July 2008 for £150. The inspiration behind his purchase was that he wanted to own the best-looking twist and go in the Portsmouth area. It took him around six months to get it to the stage that you see here with all the work being done by Steve himself.

So what has he done to it? Well, all the textured plastic has been smoothed and colour coded with a special paint finish. The blue paintwork is a MIPA product called Meteor, which is a water-based paint. This was sprayed over a blue base coat and then to finish it off, a 2k clear coat was put over the top. Steve apparently purchased the only 0.5 litre of the special Meteor paint that was in the country at the time, so it’s definitely a one-off paintjob he reckons. The orange colour is a MIPA product as well and is called Gemini; this is a solvent based paint and was sprayed over a red base coat.

To complement the paintjob, the seat has been recovered and the bike has been fitted with a Lexus rear light, clear indicator covers, new rear shocker and a Tecnigas exhaust. With Steve doing all the work himself, the cost has been kept to a minimum and he reckons that overall, it has cost around £350. He would like to thank Jon at JRC Vehicle Repairs and also MIPA Paints UK for supplying the necessary products.

With the scooter now finished, Steve has time to pursue his other hobby (he does a bit of tattooing when he’s not working on peds). But he is already looking towards his next project, a Piaggio NRG. We can’t wait to see what he does with that.
