Take control Gallery
Positioning is vital, trainer Tony Lockhart gives himself the best view around this right-hander by positioning himself close to the gutter. Mau has shifted position closer to the centre line in readiness for the next sweeping left.
Tony holds the correct line to negotiate the parked cars, Mau gets it wrong by moving back in after the first vehicle which puts him in a blind spot and takes more effort to get past the next vehicle. He should have adopted Tony’s position.
That’s better! If you’re overtaking stationary vehicles hold your line rather than moving back to the left; it gives you a better chance of seeing into the junction and lets emerging vehicles see you earlier.
Viewed from the rider's position, the junction in the previous picture looks more dangerous. Parked cars either side, hidden junctions with reduced visibility due to buildings and walls, a pedestrian (possibly waiting to cross), a pub on the corner
